D’Artagnan was chosen as Xavier University’s mascot in 1925, when it adopted the nickname ‘The Musketeers’ to symbolise the University’s ‘All for one, one for all’ spirit.
This 2.6m-high bronze statue created by Tom Tsuchiya replaced an earlier statue of D’Artagnan, donated by the class of 1962, which was on campus from 1968 to 1996.
During a visit to the campus in the 1990s, Roland Moores and his wife Margo (Roland Moores met Margo, who is French, while serving in France during the Second World War), to whom the work is dedicated, noticed the deterioration of the structure and donated a newer, larger version to the university. The current statue is a testament to the generosity of Xavier’s former students and friends.
The plaque reads ‘D’Artagnan – A Gift from a French Lady. Margo M. Moores’.
