
Statues of La Fayette in the United States
Before his exploits in America, Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834) began training as a cadet in the second company of the King’s Musketeers in 1971. His father had been a musketeer and his great-grandfather, the Comte de La Rivière, had commanded this company a few years earlier. In 1776, he took leave from the French army to take part in the American War of Independence in 1777.
A hero in the collective American memory and an honorary citizen of the United States of America, dozens of towns, counties and monuments have been named in his honour.
