The story follows the life of Milady de Winter, whose dark past is linked to that of the Comte de La Fère, first as his wife and then as his adversary.
She manages to survive an assassination attempt on her husband, whom she later reunites with as Athos.
In the end, she is taken to the gallows and the executioner turns out to be the brother of one of her former lovers.
